I was doing relatively okay for awhile. I had a sales job, selling Energy Efficiency to large businesses. I drew a weekly salary and if I sold enough energy services I would also get a commission. Just 3 months ago, I had a deal completely closed that would have been a $120,000 commission check, but alas, the energy company dropped the ball and I lost it. Things spiraled out of control after that and I wasn't able to meet my quotas and finally I was out of a job. Sales is tough, anyone will tell you.
So I proceeded to start my own company, "Video Guy NH" where I was going business to business trying to sell my video production services. Seemed like a great idea, I went to film school, I have years of experience, but I live in a small town in New Hampshire.... so no one, I mean no one, would bite. They just didn't see the need and couldn't justify spending $500 for a social media and website video despite my best efforts.
So I decided to revitalize a short film project called, 'One More Day: A Suicide Prevention Film" in the hopes that I could raise enough money to shoot the film and pay the bills all the while. I spread it all over social media, put fliers up for it all over town and talked it up to everyone... after 3 weeks, I'd only raised $25, but the bills kept coming.
I am not an unable person. I am not lazy and I love to work. I am a Veteran with a dishonorable discharge and I have a bachelor's degree which means I should be able to get a job easily, right? In NH, not so much. I sent out my resume to over 30 companies and not one of them called me back or gave me the job, even those I followed up with. I even applied for MacDonald's, but was told I was over-qualified for the position. Didn't matter anyway, minimum wage couldn't touch my debts.
Speaking of debts... my monthly expenses equate to roughly $3800/mo for; rent, utilities, cell phone, car payment, insurance, child support, credit cards, student loans etc. When nothing happened for nearly 3 months, I went into debt and serious debt at that. My rent is several months past due. My cell phone is disconnected. All of my credit cards are maxed or overdrafted, my checking account is negative and even my paypal will be negative $3600 once all of the eChecks are rejected by my bank, which is insane. The electric is due for shut off in a few weeks and the cable shortly after.
So, how does one get through this? Because of my destroyed credit rating there is no bank that will lend me money to recover. All of my friends are battling their own debts and without the ability to even gas up my car I can barely leave the house...
With all of these problems in my head I was finally forced to get ahold of my wife's family in Vegas. They have money problems too but they also have a big house and said if we can get there, we can stay with them until we get back on our feet. Great I thought! Until I realized it's going to cost at least $2500 to drive out there and ship our stuff and that's if we leave most of our stuff back in New Hampshire. Not too mention, I need to get my car inspected and registered ($220) before we go and I already know the brakes are not going to pass inspection, so that's another $600. I have to feed my family for the next 3 weeks, make the car and insurance payments and bunch of other incidentals... Sigh.
On top of everything, my wife has a bad cavity, probably infected by now and we can't even afford to get that fixed. The truth is, we need a miracle. I have 19 days to figure out how to get at least $5000 so that we can make the trip to Vegas and I don't know how to do it.
This is a somber post, but I hope anyone who's reading it feels a little better about their life. If you can help, thank you! I mean that, thank you so much.
